Discovering the Healing Power Of Apples

It has been established sometime ago that apples are a good source of vitamin C and both soluble and insoluble fibre...in the form of pectin. Apples are believed to help relieve constipation, lower cholesterol levels and prevent colon and other types of digestive cancer.
Apples have massive load of nutrients, antioxidants, fibre and phytochemicals. The apple peel has been shown to contain triterpenoids, compounds that possess strong anti-cancer activity, especially in preventing breast, colon, and liver cancer.
Basically, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.
It has also been established that pectin can help control appetite by creating a feeling of fullness in the stomach.
Apples also contain significant amounts of boron, known to help strengthen bones and alertness.
Recently, the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry revealed an experiment of apple polyphenols used in fruit flies that resulted in longer average life spans. There was also an indication of reversed markers of aging and imminent death.
A recent Finnish Study showed a strong relationship between higher intake of flavonoids and lower growth of lung cancer. In another study apples have also shown their ability to reduce the risk of breast cancer. It has been suggested that a high quercetin content of apples may be responsible for its diverse health benefits. Quercetin has proven itself to be a great attacker of free radicals and thus help prevent diseases.
Another flavonoid called phloridzin, found in apples help to prevent osteoporosis and may increase bone density.
Asthma has been affecting many people, and apple consumption can decrease asthma risk.
Another study conducted by researchers from Cornell University discovered that the antioxidant quercetin found in apples also helps to protect brain cells from oxidative stress. In the past studies have revealed that oxidative stress is a tissue damaging process linked to Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative disorders.
It has been demonstrated that fiber is another component of apples that helps contribute to lowering of heart disease. The reason given for this phenomenon is that apples are so potent in this area due to their high pectin content. Pectin is a natural fiber found in fruits, and apples have proven to be number one source for it.
It would seem that the old advice of "eating an apple a day" may be proving healthier than we thought of before. If you indulge on apples, is there no possibility of extending your life? The possibilities are there as shown by the experiment conducted with fruit flies.
